The discursive format of RTD 2015 was designed to enable rich experiences and conversations to take place during the conference event, with ‘research through design’ artefacts to-hand. In support of this, we endeavoured to capture, interpret and document the unfolding interactions at the event. This included inviting delegates to use a mobile phone app called Bootlegger to capture and share short video clips, and also inviting six professional creative practitioners to ‘scribe’ the discussions taking place in the Rooms of Interest and Provocations. The scribes were non-delegates invited and coordinated by the Documentation Chairs and predominantly used pen and paper sketching and their own aesthetic sensibilities to capture their impressions.
A number of the scribe interpretations related to specific sessions are linked to in the following snapshot of the conference documentation. The experimental scribing has since generated valuable critical feedback for the RTD community, raising new and interesting questions about what it means to capture, represent, and disseminate research through design in the context of its ‘live presentation’ versus ‘by others’, through a mediated or interpretative frame. Feedback on scribing will be incorporated into future iterations of the conference format.
